This year we had some out-of-town visitors for Thanksgiving. My Aunt Paula and Uncle Butch came in from Houston, and my brother's wife, Bonnie and their two kids, Joseph and Laura, were all here also. My brother had to work today and should be here tonight. It was a wonderful dinner as usual. My parents made the turkey and cornbread dressing and the rest of us made the rest of the stuff!! We will all be getting together again tomorrow at our house for a winter cookout.
The best thing this year was getting together with family that we had not seen for awhile.
The other person missing besides my brother Jeffrey was Jeremy. He actually had to work over 12 hours yesterday and the same today - but he is excited about getting double time because he is starting school this spring and wants to save up as much money as possible before then.

I'm not sure what it was with boxes and laundry baskets but all of our kids really loved playing in them. Here is Joel playing in a box we used to keep in the living room for toys. He spent hours playing in it. What a look of pure joy on his face!

Cool Kids

This is another picture I scanned at Lee's mother's house last summer. I love the 'cool' sunglasses that Lee, his brother Mark, and his sister Judy are wearing. Notice that the lady in the car also has her sunglasses on. I think she is Lee's Grandmother...

Jeremy and James

Jeremy and our neighbor James, became good friends almost immediately when the Dunns moved into the neighborhood. They were pretty much inseparable. Jeannie, Mark, James, Jessica, and Jackie lived just down the street for several years until they moved to the Austin area. James is now in the Marines, I believe!

This is a picture that Lee's brother Kevin sent me last year. I had forgotten all about it until I found it on my flash drive the other day. The only one of the brothers who really has much hair left these days is Mark - and he still has a lot!

I had been looking for an old bag that had some old camera lenses in it for awhile. Saturday, while looking for something else, there it was - hanging on the wall hooks with all my other camera stuff! Go figure! Anyway, inside the bag were two rolls of film. One of them was blank, but the other had these photos plus some of Jeremy as a baby! Cool Stuff!

Hungry Horse Montana

.

Credits: Tag, fiber, tabs, Grungy overlay by Atomic Cupcake; Offshore Banking Business, OctemberScript, and Arial fonts, Scrapbook Max software. History from www.hungryhorse-montana.com
I had planned on doing this page awhile back but I was extremely disappointed that I could only find one picture of me on this horse statue. Yesterday, while looking for pictures of the kids, I found my grandmother's old slide viewer and in the case were more pictures of the 'hungry horse'. I was totally thrilled, as you can imagine. I used to love our trip to Hungry Horse - we always stopped there on the way to Glacier Park - and I always wanted to get a picture on the horse. We quit going to Montana in 1972 when my grandmother sold her place. But we went back on a 'fun' trip in 1980 - of course we had to go by and get a picture on "Old Jerry"! I wonder if it is still there. I searched for Hungry Horse images on the web but did not find any. But the Hungry Horse website says that there are 'statuesque' reminders of the hungry horses, so maybe they are still around! They used to refer to the town as the Dam Town and the store was the Dam Store. I thought that was cool because I could actually say it without getting in trouble!

More Scanning!

I had recently started to scan some old photos when I realized that some of them were missing from the folders they were stored in. (The original packaging they came in when I got them developed) So, since I still had the negatives, (also in the original packaging they came in when I got them developed - bad idea I know but it sure came in handy for this project!) I decided to scan them instead. What a surprise! The scanned negatives have much better color than the photos. I'm not sure if they were originally printed that way or if they have faded over the years.
Here is a sample:

The photo above was scanned from the negative.

This photo was scanned from the print. Notice that they even chopped off the sky!!

An Accomplishment

Over the weekend when I was searching through my armoire to find old 70's stuff for our hippie costumes, I found an undeveloped roll of film. I was so excited! But trying to get it developed ended up being quite a challenge. I went to Walmart only to find out that they no longer have a film developer on-site. I would have to wait 3 days! So next I went to a Walgreens that is pretty close to home - to find the guy trying to get their film developer working because it was broken! So finally I went to another Walgreens a bit further from home and got it developed. It ended up being Lee's graduation pictures! I didn't even remember that I had taken them. Here are a few that I scrapped:

Halloween Party

Lee and I went to a neighborhood Halloween Party last night. We dressed up as old hippies. It was fun putting the costumes together because originally we were just going to be hippies - I called Lee to see what color hair he wanted - blonde or black - he chose blonde. Then, as I pulled the blonde hair packages out, I saw the grey and thought - Perfect!! So I called Lee and he agreed that grey was the way to go. We even had a baggie of 'weed' - actually some crushed leaves from our front yard. The leather purse is really vintage 70's - made for me by a friend of the family - Kathryn Walker. She even sewed on my initials in leather - D N . The shirts are actually t-shirts that were on clearance. There were even some 'surprise' guests - our former next-door neighbors, Paul and Ginny, who are now living in North Carolina but are moving back to El Paso within the next couple of months. Lee has been really sick for several days so we were only able to stay at the party for a couple of hours, but we had fun while we were there. Here we are in our costumes:

Another Old Pic

I just love looking at old pictures and I love the fact that we have scanners nowadays to use to get 'copies' of them. I scanned this at Lee's mother's house awhile back. Then on a recent visit with Lee's grandfather, Arthur, he told us this story about when he was little. I remembered the picture and just had to put it together with his story!

Old Pics

While at my cousin Jennifer's house, I scanned some of my Aunt Anne's pictures. A few were in pretty bad shape, like this one of my brother and me, but I decided to just scrap it 'as is'.

And, like I said about this picture of "Christ of the Ozarks", I remember going to visit it when I was a kid and I think I remember music playing from some loud speakers. I also remember getting a handmade doll in Eureka springs - I think it was called an apple-head doll. I thought she was pretty ugly at the time - but I guess when your head is made from an apple you don't have much chance to be beautiful! I'm not sure if she was really made from an apple but I think I do still have her and now I am going to have to see if I can find her!
I did a search for this statue and found it - here are a couple of links - it's kind of a strange place...

Aunt Anne

This is a difficult post for me to write. It is about my Aunt Anne. She passed away Friday. She was just told in about Mid-August that she had a matter of weeks to live. She took it remarkably well - laughing and joking about it as the days passed. The last weekend in August, Josh and I drove with my mother and father to Denton to drop my mother off to stay with Aunt Anne, who is her sister. Then, the next weekend (Labor Day Weekend) Lee and the kids and I made the trip again. Aunt Anne just wanted to see everybody and tell them how much she loves them and remember old times. She told us up front that she did not want this to be a sad time - but a happy one with her family around her. We all had a wonderful weekend just hanging out and reminiscing.

Aunt Anne was just 12 years older than me. When I was very young and we went to visit my grandparents in Arkansas, Aunt Anne and her sister, Aunt Kay, were teenagers. They had a 1967 Mustang which they would take me for “cruises” in, like small-town teenagers tend to do. They always bought me a cherry coke so I was quite happy!!

Later, when Aunt Anne got divorced, she and my cousins, Jennifer and Jerry, moved here in town. She was then a single mother. I would often get to spend the night with them and it was always fun because Aunt Anne was just plain fun to be with. She always made me feel special because I was older. My cousin, Jennifer, used to ask "why does Dana get to do that and I don't?" Aunt Anne would simply reply "Because she's bigger, that's why." I loved it! We used to go to the drive-in quite often, go shopping or just hang out at her apartment. I once won tickets to a midnight showing of the movie “Car Wash” when it first came out. Aunt Anne, of course, was the one I chose to go with me!! (of course I guess I really went with her since she was the one who had to drive!!)

When I graduated from high school, Aunt Anne got me my first job at Levi's. It was so interesting to get to meet the people I had heard her talk about for so long. She was such a blast.

Joel shares Aunt Anne’s birthday because, since I had already had 2 c-sections already, it was just a given that he would also be a c-section baby. My doctor gave me 3 different dates to choose from, one of which was June 21, Aunt Anne’s birthday. Of course I chose that date for Joel to be born even though it was the latest of the 3 dates. Aunt Anne called Joel “my man”.

Several years ago, when my grandmother was very ill, Aunt Anne moved back here from the Dallas area to take care of her. She and her son Andy lived in a teeny retirement apartment with Granny for a few years. It was very cramped and stressful but she toughed it out until the end. She later moved back to the Dallas area to be near my cousin Jennifer.

Now I need to talk about Jennifer. She was a pretty rebellious pre-teen and teenager but has become a wonderful woman. She took Aunt Anne into her home so that she would be comfortable and surrounded by family. She is also taking Andy in and is treating him like her own son and driving him quite a way to his old high school every day. I am impressed with the compassion and caring and strength she has shown.

Then there is my other cousin, Stephanie. She is the daughter of my mother's other sister, Kay, who passed away late last summer. She is a nurse and travelled to Denton from the Houston area every weekend to help out. Another incredible woman!!

Both Jennifer and Stephanie are quite a few years younger than me so I have always thought of them as kids - but they have proven that they are wonderful, caring women throughout all of this.

Then, last but certainly not least, there is my mother. She went to stay with my Aunt Anne for several months about 2 years ago when she had her first bout with cancer. She was basically Aunt Anne's caregiver for a couple of months until she could get along on her own. Now, along with Jennifer and Stephanie, she did it again. She is an incredibly strong woman herself and I love her very much. She is the person everybody asks to speak at funerals because, for one thing, she can actually do it without breaking down and crying, and the other, most important thing, she is a very good speaker and can come up with great things to say about anybody. The first time I remember her doing so was at my Uncle Mike’s funeral. He was killed in a car wreck a few months before Lee and I got married. I couldn’t believe she could actually get up there and speak like she did but she did and it was beautiful.

Anyway, I feel blessed and proud to have such a great family because, in the end, it is family that are the most important people in your life.

I only hope that if I was put in the same situation as Jennifer, Stephanie, and my mother, that I would be half as great as they are!! Here are some pictures of Aunt Anne:

3 Birthdays

Last weekend while visiting my brother Jeffrey and his family, we ended up celebrating 3 birthdays! Jeffrey's had been the week before, but they were actually in Chicago at the time for Mr. Beach's (Bonnie's father) burial. We never actually had a cake for Josh's birthday, and Saturday was Lee's birthday so Bonnie added their names to the cake and we sang to them all at once.

Fun at the Border Patrol Check

Over the weekend we travelled to Lubbock for a memorial service for my Sister-in-law's father. He was 88.
On the way, we had to stop at the border patrol check as usual, but things didn't go quite as they normally do...Jeremy was driving. I was in the front passenger seat. Josh was directly behind Jeremy and Lee was behind me. Joel and Jenna were in the back seat.
Jeremy was prepared for the usual 'Are you all American citizens' and he was ready to say 'yes'. But this is how it actually went:
1st Officer - Where are you going today?
Jeremy - uhhhhh (then to me) where are we going? (not the type of hesitation you should have at a border patrol checkpoint!)
me to Jeremy - Lubbock!
Jeremy to officer - Lubbock.
Officer - OK - where are you coming from?
Jeremy - El Paso
Officer - Where do you live?
Jeremy - El Paso
Officer - Which side of town?
Jeremy - West side
Officer - Which street?
Jeremy - (tells him our street)
(by this time they have noticed other people in the back of the van - Josh, Lee, Joel and Jenna)
2nd Officer - is this door locked? Can you open it?
(while Josh is unlocking the door 2nd officer asks - And what are you going to be doing in Hobbs?
Me - It's Lubbock and we're going to a funeral
2nd Officer - Is everybody back here American Citizens?
They all say 'yes' as he actually gets a good look at Josh (who has recently grown a full beard and did I mention that Lee has told him he should stay away from airports? Lee says he looks like he would be named Mukkhi Farshad)
2nd Officer (to Josh) - And where were YOU born sir?
Josh - Here
2nd Officer - Here? (we are actually in the middle of nowhere)
Josh - Providence....Providence Hospital (with no trace of a foreign accent)
I guess by this time they realize we're not drug-runners or terrorists and they let us go.
As we are driving away, nobody has realized why they targeted Josh like that except Lee - who mentions something about the beard - prompting Josh to exclaim - That does it - I'm shaving it off!! And we all were almost rolling on the floor with laughter for quite awhile down the road! Funny in retrospect but kind of scary not to mention annoying at the time. I wanted to just strangle Jeremy for not knowing where we were going in the first place.

I will try to post a picture of Josh in his beard so you can see what Lee meant!

Hiking with Pa Pa

My father has been working on a new mountain bike trail in the Franklin Mountains State Park. He is just about finished with it and he took us on a hike over it Sunday. It is a great trail in a beautiful area. We hiked but it looks like a totally rideable bike trail.
Here are some pics from our hike. Josh actually took the first one.

Fantasy Football

I am now in a Fantasy Football league!! I have been listening to some guys at work talking about it for awhile now and last week I heard that they didn't have enough people and if somebody else didn't sign up they were not going to be able to form their league. So - enter me and my big mouth - - asking why they had not talked to any of us females about it? I was told "because I didn't think you knew anything about football" and I pretended to be offended saying that was chauvenistic - suffice it to say I am now in the league - called "Good ol Boys"! Our draft was Friday night online and we had to bid on players in an auction. It was really strange and took 2 and a half hours. It was kind of funny because I was on the computer doing my football draft and Lee was cooking supper. I simply got as many of Lee's players (he is also in a different fantasy football league) as I could and 'winged' it with the rest. Then I went in and traded some players because it looked like I didn't do a very good job of winging it the first time. I was even able to bench a couple of players for both of us at the last minute because they play for Houston and Baltimore and that game got postponed because of Hurricane Ike. Oh - and I won my first game - whoopie!! (Well - technically the second game because our scores were calculated for the week before after we got our players and I lost that one after the fact) Now I am watching the football players' rankings and projected points and am ready to make some more switches for next week.

The Birds

Last week, Jenna was sick so I took the day off and took her to the doctor. (She was just starting to get an ear infection - I can't even remember the last time one of my kids had one of those!) Afterwards, she wanted to go to Dairy Queen because it is right near the doctor's office. Since we both got big frozen drinks, I decided to drive around a bit to finish our drinks before going to fill her prescription because I didn't want to leave them in the hot van to melt. During this drive, we happened upon this incredible flock of beautiful white birds (egrets?) - and since I ALWAYS have my purse camera handy, I was able to get these pictures. As you can see, Jenna offered to help get pictures from her side of the car and I just love the picture she took - of herself in the rear-view mirror along with the birds.

The Cherry Stand

In the 1960's, my grandparents (Me Ma and Pa Pa) bought a cherry orchard on the Flathead Lake in Montana. It was an absolutely wonderful place to visit as a kid. It was interesting because a group of mostly school teachers from Texas all bought places up there at about the same time. There were the Maddox's, the Covingtons, the Reisdorf's, My Uncle Ted and Aunt Mable Newman, and my Grandparents, and I think there were others I don't remember. They were able do it because they were teachers and had the summers off to tend to the orchards. My grandparents were not teachers, but my Grandfather was able to take an early retirement. They sold their house in Andrews, Texas and became Snowbirds. The families still left up there are the Covingtons and the Maddox daughters and their husbands - who each have a place. I often wish that somehow my grandparents' place could have remained in the family, but the money matters just didn't work out that way.

More Treasures

It has been so much fun going through these old slides!!
This is my mother, my father's father and my father's sister playing a game of dominos in 1961!
It is awesome to have found it.
My aunt's two daughters (Jennifer and Michele) are the "80's hair" girls from a few posts ago.
I probably should explain that I have 2 cousins named Jennifer - one from my mom's side and one from my dad's side. They are actually Jennifer Leigh and Jennifer Lee. When the second Jennifer was born, my aunt Anne had no idea that Aunt Paula's Jennifer's middle name sounded just like Lee.

Scanning Slides!!!

I finally finished scanning all of my grandparents' slides into my computer - a whopping 783 of them! It is like a treasure hunt or an expedition - you never know what you will find next!! Now I have started to scan my parents' slides. They were in the same size box but are more tightly packed so I bet there are more than 783 of theirs to scan. My neck and shoulders are telling me to stop but it is so interesting that I can't!!
The best thing about getting them into a digital format is that I can put them all on DVD's and share them with the rest of my family - which I will be doing soon!!!
